Be part of something amazing

We are a growing organisation looking for talented scientists and engineers, from early career generalists with the potential to develop a career; to senior roles to drive our future vision and support to the UK Quantum industry. We are looking for experimental and theoretical quantum scientists who are looking to build their careers in a diverse environment. Our research ranges from developing the next generation atomic clocks to quantum computing and communications, and we welcome applications from those with experience of instrument and device test and evaluation.

There are opportunities for talented engineers in a range of disciplines including electronics, particularly with an aptitude for scientific instrument and product development, and hardware, software, and systems engineers.

“If you’re interested in doing cutting-edge R&D, or just exploring new ideas, I’d definitely check out working at NPL.”

Advance science in a world-leading laboratory

NPL is the UK’s National Metrology Institute. Our role is to research, create and deliver the measurement infrastructure which underpins the UK’s prosperity and quality of life across many fields of industry. We provide the confidence in scientific measurements which accelerates innovation and drives economic growth, particularly in the application of new technologies.

The UK government is investing significant funds into a national quantum technologies programme. By the end of 2024, government through all its agencies will have invested at least £1bn in quantum technologies over ten years. The purpose of this investment is to generate economic growth, with increased security and resilience.

Recent new funding has enabled us to expand the work we do in all quantum technologies and establish a wide-ranging capability for the independent test and evaluation of new quantum products. This is critical to build confidence in quantum for investors, end users, and manufacturers themselves, many of them SMEs and start-ups. Our testing capability is expanding into new areas of technology and new areas geographically as we seek out the need for test and evaluation within industry.
